On arrival at Cape Maclear leave your vehicle at Kayak Africa's base camp and take a boat out to Mumbo Island. This is the undisputed jewel of the Lake Malawi National Park. Lying 10km offshore of Cape Maclear, it is small with stunning good looks, and with the whole island falling inside an exclusive concession area it is the perfect place to indulge your Castaway Fantasy. A tiny camp is tucked away on the rocks and beach at the head of a deep and serene bay. It features tastefully furnished safari tents with shaded decks, hammocks, and en suite hot bucket showers and ‘eco-loos’. Camp construction adheres to the strictest principles of eco-architecture, and its operation has almost zero ecological impact on the island. Freedom and quality island time - together with a good dose of healthy outdoor fun - is what visits to Mumbo Island are all about. An island chef produces three hearty meals a day, and guests are free to choose between activity, exploration and leisure. Highly recommended are pre-breakfast swims that redefine the term refreshing; snorkelling with the colourful cichlid tropical fish; and ending off with a sunset cruise around the island by boat or kayak.
